Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a Japanese woodblock print artist. After graduating from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), he dedicated himself to creating woodblock prints.
Kasamatsu created many works across a wide range of genres, including portraits, landscapes, and animal paintings, from the early Showa era through to the post-war period. His works are characterized by his unique sense of color and impressive composition, often featuring landscapes such as nature and cityscapes.
Furthermore, while Kasamatsu inherited traditional woodblock printing techniques, he also created experimental works using new techniques and materials. His works have been particularly well-received in the United States and are held in many art museums and private collections.
In addition to his career as a print artist, Kasamatsu also worked as an art educator, mentoring many aspiring artists. He is considered an important figure in the Japanese printmaking world, alongside artists such as Jakuchu Ito and Tsuguharu Fujita.
