Description
A folding screen is called Byoubu in Japanese. Its name comes from shutting wind. It was necessary furniture for life as space partitioning since the Nara era (710~794). Nowadays, it is developing a new folding screen to fit modern life. You can decorate it by standing it up or hanging it on a wall using a hanger.
Iris : Kinsai kakou (Kinsai Processing)
Iris has been cherished by the people of Japan for centuries.
This screen is decorated with gold-painted irises, using a technique called Kinsai Kakou, traditionally found on TOMESODE* kimonos. Special adhesive is applied to the patterned sheet, enchanting the design with texture and depth.
*TOMESODE: A formal kimono, typically black, with designs along the bottom of the skirt worn by married women on ceremonial occasions.
Hichisai haku
On the rich background of irises, brass leaves known as Hichisai-Haku are applied. It has been chemically oxidized to create a beautiful multi-colored patina.
