This ornamental dagger is manufactured in Gifu Prefecture which has historically known workplace of Japanese sword. The blade is handmade with the traditional technique of sand casting..
This ornamental dagger is called as “Tantou”(Sword for tussle) by CHOJUSAI TSUNATOSHI, well known sword smith lived between 17th and 18th century.
Tantou(Sword for tussle) has longer history than Wakisasshi and Long sword (swords to wear at the side of armor of Samurai), and it was used for tussle in the battlefield.
This sword "SOUITOMAKI KOSHIRAE" wound up by strong tightly twisted threads was so popular between Samurai, because it is so durable and practical to use.
