KUNIYOSHI ( Utagawa Kuniyoshi )
KUNIYOSHI was born in Tokyo.
He learned drawing since childhood. When he was 12 years Kuniyoshi was found his talent by Utagawa Toyokuni after he became pupil under Toyokuni,
he published many prints as Sumo ranking, caver page of Ayame Satoh book. He especially good at “Musha-e” (a picture of heroes, military commanders who appear in history, legends, and military records, and the scenes of their battles.)
His works have a power, a novel design power, and a wide range of strange ideas.
This is one of poem of “Ogura hyakunin-isshu” . The poet is Kakimoto Hitomaro
Kuniyoshi expressed the image of the poem in this woodblock print.
"Ogura Nazorae Hyakunin Isshu" is a modern (at that time) world of "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" by three people, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Utagawa Kunisada (3rd generation Toyokuni) from the Edo period. A series of 100 nishiki-e paintings arranged and remade as ukiyo-e.
Kuniyoshi is in charge of 51 sheets, Hiroshige is in charge of 35 sheets, and Toyokuni is in charge of 14 sheets. Published around 1846 (Koka 3).
