Kamisaka Sekka was born in Kyoto.
He learned painting under Suzuki Zuigen from Shijo school.
When he was 23 years old, he realized that decorative arts were the way he should aim, and started studying craft design under Kishi Kokei who was a master of Japanese crafts at that age.
Sekka has had a great influence on the world of traditional Kyoto crafts such as dyeing and weaving and ceramics.
When Sekka went overseas, he found that western arts were influenced by Japanese culture a lot.
After that, Sekka took many Japanese styles to his works and continued making a not only painting, but also dyeing and weaving, ceramics, lacquer art, interior decoration, and even landscaping.
