Description

The earliest known example of cloisonné can be found on King Tutankhamen's crown, dating back approximately 2,500 years. This intricate art form was introduced to Japan from China and Korea around 600 B.C. A notable example can be seen on the metal door at Houo-do in Byodo-in, Uji, Kyoto. Cloisonné art flourished in Japan during the 16th century, and in the 19th century, a German chemist named Wagner developed a glaze specifically for Japanese cloisonné, which significantly contributed to the evolution of Japanese cloisonné as we know it today.

The Japanese word for cloisonné, "Shippo," translates to "seven treasures," symbolizing the beauty of the art form that captures the essence of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, coral, pearl, agate, and squilla.

This plate depicts cranes, Mt. Fuji, and red and white plum blossoms, all of which are the auspicious motifs meaning happiness, longevity, and prosperity.
