Toshi Yoshida was a Japanese woodblock print artist who worked throughout his life. He was born in Tokyo in 1889 and passed away in 1955. Yoshida created various genres of artwork including portraits, landscapes, and animal paintings, and was particularly skilled in the technique of woodblock printing.
Yoshida studied abroad in America and was influenced by Western artists he met during his stay, introducing Western techniques and styles in woodblock printing to Japan. He incorporated the bright color sense of Western painting into his woodblock prints, creating his unique style.
Yoshida was a rare Japanese printmaker who received high recognition overseas. His artwork was highly praised at the International Exposition held in America in 1925. In 1956, he won a gold medal in the printmaking category at the "20th-Century Japanese Art Exhibition" held in America.
Yoshida not only worked as a printmaker but also as an art critic. He worked hard to promote printmaking and mentored many younger artists. Yoshida is considered an important figure in the Japanese printmaking community, along with other artists such as Tsuguharu Fujita and Nizaburo Ito.
