【About Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Sword – Sohaya no Tsurugi Utsusonari】

“Sohaya no Tsurugi Utsusonari” is a legendary sword associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616), the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 260 years.

The sword’s name can be translated as:
“The Sword of Sohaya, Made by Utsusonari”,
and it is often regarded as a spiritual or talismanic blade, rather than a weapon for battle.

  • This sword was enshrined with Ieyasu’s remains at Nikkō Tōshō-gū, the famous shrine dedicated to him.

  • It is considered a symbol of divine protection and authority, reflecting Ieyasu’s power and legacy.

  • The blade was inscribed with the phrase:
    “Sohaya no Tsurugi Utsusonari”,
which is a poetic and mysterious expression, possibly meaning:
“A sword from the realm of Sohaya, manifested in the present.”

This sacred sword was likely inspired by earlier mythological swords such as Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, and while its original purpose is shrouded in symbolism, it became one of the most iconic swords associated with the Tokugawa family.

■【Note】

This is a modern replica created by a contemporary sword manufacturer, inspired by the legendary sword of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
It is not the original historical blade.
