"The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" by Andō Hiroshige (Utagawa Hiroshige) is a masterpiece of ukiyo-e woodblock prints created around 1833.
The series consists of 55 prints in total, depicting the 53 post stations along the Tōkaidō road between Nihonbashi in Edo and Sanjō Bridge in Kyoto, plus both terminals. Each print lyrically portrays the landscapes of the stations and travelers, vividly expressing the natural scenery of the four seasons and the lives of common people.
Through Hiroshige's exceptional compositional skills and sense of color, weather conditions such as rain, snow, and mist are magnificently rendered. This work became a huge success at the time, establishing Hiroshige's reputation and influencing Western Impressionist painters including Van Gogh and Monet.
It is highly regarded worldwide today as the pinnacle of Japanese landscape prints.
