Imari ware, also known as Imari porcelain, is a type of Japanese porcelain produced in the town of Arita, located in the Saga Prefecture on Kyushu Island. The name "Imari" comes from the nearby port of Imari, from which the porcelain was shipped during the Edo period (1603–1868). Imari ware is characterized by its intricate designs, vibrant colors, and the use of cobalt blue underglaze, often combined with overglaze enamels in red, green, and gold.
Originally created in the early 17th century, Imari ware became popular both in Japan and internationally, especially in Europe, where it was highly prized by collectors. The porcelain is known for its durability and fine craftsmanship, with designs often featuring floral patterns, landscapes, and scenes from Japanese mythology. There are two main types of Imari ware: "Ko-Imari" (old Imari), which refers to the early pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, and "Nabeshima," a more refined style developed for the exclusive use of the Nabeshima clan.
Today, Imari ware remains a symbol of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and continues to be produced in Arita, celebrated for its beauty and historical significance.
