About This Garment
This knee-length cotton kimono draws its silhouette from the hanten (半天) — a short, padded jacket that became popular among craftsmen and merchants in Edo-period Japan as practical everyday wear. Reimagined here in a refined, unpadded cotton form, it sits comfortably between a kimono and a casual jacket — easy to wear, easy to move in.
A front pocket adds everyday practicality, while the knee length makes it more versatile than a full-length yukata — ideal as a robe, loungewear, or even a statement layering piece over casual clothing.
The Zen Embroidery
The character 禅 (Zen) is embroidered on the back — a bold, meditative statement in the tradition of Japanese calligraphy. Zen Buddhism, which arrived in Japan from China in the 12th century, became the philosophical foundation of samurai culture, the tea ceremony, and much of what the world recognizes as distinctly Japanese.
