About Kimekomi Dolls
Kimekomi Dolls are traditional Japanese dolls belived to have originated in the mid-Edo period at Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto (about 280 years ago).
They are made using a uniquely Japanese technique in which the doll's body is formed from Toso, a material made by mixing paulownia wood powder with starch-based glue. Grooves are then carved into the body, and pieces of fabric are carefully fitted and tucked into these grooves to create the doll's clothing.
Unlike other traditional dolls that are dressed in separate garments, Kimekomi dolls have fabric fitted directly onto their sculpted bodies, giving the appearance of being fully dressed. This technique creates their distinctive soft, rounded, and gentle silhouette.
Kimekome dolls are also lightweight and durable, making them easy to display, handle, and carry. They are resistant to losing their shape, allowing their beautiful appearance to be preserved for many years.
