Antique Uchikake
This antique Uchikake dates from the Meiji Period (1868–1912) and was made in Japan.

Design
This antique Uchikake from the Meiji Period (1868–1912) features magnificent embroidery of a phoenix and paulownia motifs on a rich deep purple background. This elegant combination has long been associated with nobility, prosperity, and auspicious celebrations in Japan. The refined design and luxurious craftsmanship reflect the artistic excellence of the Meiji era, making this garment both a remarkable textile artwork and a symbol of enduring good fortune.

・Phoenix
The phoenix is one of the most revered symbols in Japanese and East Asian culture. It represents prosperity, virtue, harmony, and peace. Traditionally believed to appear during times of happiness and good governance, the phoenix is considered an auspicious creature associated with celebration, success, and a bright future.

・Paulownia (Kiri)
Paulownia is a symbol of nobility, dignity, and prosperity. Historically associated with the Imperial Court and high-ranking families, the paulownia motif has long been regarded as a mark of prestige and refinement. Its elegant leaves and blossoms are frequently featured in traditional Japanese decorative arts and formal garments.

・The Phoenix and Paulownia Combination
The phoenix and paulownia share a special relationship in Japanese tradition. According to legend, the phoenix descends only upon the paulownia tree, making these motifs a natural and highly auspicious pairing. Together, they symbolize noble character, prosperity, harmony, and the arrival of good fortune.

Meaning of the Combination
Together, these motifs convey wishes for prosperity, honor, happiness, and a harmonious future. The phoenix represents virtue and flourishing success, while the paulownia symbolizes prestige and enduring prosperity. Their combination creates a powerful expression of auspicious blessings, making this Uchikake particularly meaningful for weddings, ceremonial occasions, and collectors of fine Japanese textiles.
