【Who is Shimazu Yoshihisa?】
Shimazu Yoshihisa (島津義久, 1533–1611) was a prominent Japanese daimyo of the Sengoku period and the head of the Shimazu clan in Satsuma Province (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture).
Here’s a brief outline of who he was:
-
Clan & Territory: Leader of the Shimazu clan, which controlled much of Kyushu in southwestern Japan.
-
Rise to Power: Under his leadership, the clan expanded aggressively during the late Sengoku period, eventually controlling most of Kyushu by the 1580s.
-
Conflict with Toyotomi Hideyoshi: His expansion brought him into conflict with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who launched the Kyushu Campaign in 1587. Yoshihisa surrendered and submitted to Hideyoshi, becoming his vassal.
-
Later Life: After surrendering, he retired from active leadership in favor of his younger brother Shimazu Yoshihiro, though he remained an influential figure until his death in 1611.
He is remembered as a skilled but cautious strategist — his victories greatly expanded the Shimazu’s influence, but his eventual defeat marked the end of Kyushu’s independence from central unification under Hideyoshi.
【About the symbol】
The cross-shaped symbol on Shimazu Yoshihisa’s helmet is known as the Shimazu clan crest (Shimazu mon).
The cross on Shimazu Yoshihisa’s helmet is the family crest of the Shimazu clan, one of Japan’s most powerful samurai families during the Sengoku period. The design, called the “Shimazu Cross”, is a simple cross enclosed in a circle. Its origin is believed to be influenced by early contact with Western missionaries and trade, as the Shimazu were among the first clans in Japan to interact with Europeans. The crest symbolized the clan’s identity, unity, and martial power, and it appeared on their banners, armor, and other possessions.
