Description
A Masterpiece of Japanese Porcelain — Gold Leaf Iris on Arita Ware
This refined decorative plate depicts elegant iris (kakitsubata) hand-painted on fine Arita porcelain, then covered with the same highest-quality genuine gold leaf used in Kyoto's Kinkakuji Temple. A flower long celebrated in Japanese art and poetry, the iris brings a sense of graceful dignity to this exceptional piece. At φ19 cm, it is beautifully proportioned — ideal for display in a tokonoma alcove, on a shelf, or as a distinguished gift.
Crafted by the Kozan Kiln, one of Arita's most distinguished traditional kilns, this plate is made using the secret technique of Kinrande — a multi-stage process requiring extraordinary skill:
- Designs are hand-painted onto the porcelain
- The plate is fired in the kiln
- Lacquer is carefully applied while preserving every detail of the design
- Genuine gold leaf is applied by hand, one sheet at a time
Each step demands the utmost precision. The result is a piece that is truly the work of a master.
What is Arita Ware?
Arita Ware is Japan's first porcelain, produced since the 17th century in and around Arita Town, Saga Prefecture. It is celebrated for its hard, translucent white body and the richness of its hand-painted decoration — indigo blue, red, yellow, and gold applied with extraordinary delicacy.
