This ornamental dagger is manufactured in Gifu Prefecture which has historically been known as the workplace of the Japanese sword. The blade is handmade with the traditional technique of sand casting.
This ornamental dagger is called “Tantou”(Sword for tussle) by CHOJUSAI TSUNATOSHI, a well-known swordsmith who lived between the 17th and 18th centuries.
Tantou(Sword for tussle) has a longer history than Wakisasshi and Long sword (swords to wear at the side of the armor of Samurai), and it was used for a tussle on the battlefield.
This sword "SOUITOMAKI KOSHIRAE" wound up by strong tightly twisted threads was so popular between Samurai, because it is so durable and practical to use.
