Hagoita is a wooden racket for traditional Japanese badminton. Imperial court in the Heian period (794-1185), people were playing with a stick and a ball like a hockey, and sticks have been gradually changed to paddles.
In the Muromachi period(1333-1573), the uses of Hagoita began to diversify. It is said that around this time, there began to be two types of Hagoita, one for a quill paddle for play and the other for a gift. It is also said that it was around this time that people enjoy playing with a shuttlecock as a prayer to ward off bad luck during the New Year.
