Many images of Buddhas carved directly into wall blocks at USUKI in Ohita prefecture, Japan are very famous. Nobody knows when, by whom or what purpose these ware carved, however ,legend says that these ware made by the artist from Korea over 1,000 years ago. The most famous one among them is this head of Buddha which felt from the original 3m statue and it is guessed that somebody picked it up and placed it on to the stone base where it is now can be seen.
Beautiful long crescent semi-closed eyes, elegant eyebrows, gracefully closed mouth, plump cheeks are all mysterious qualities of this depiction of Buddha.
Choko Matsumoto, a well known artist for his painting of the Image of Buddaha, often made trip to USUKI to sketch it. This picture seems to have been depicted as if in prayer. Uchida art co. crafted this picture as a woodblock print spending one full year on its production.
