The place is known for the production of Wakasa lacquerware, which was designated as a Traditional Craft in 1978. Over 80% of lacquered chopsticks in Japan are made in Obama City.

The unique pattern inspired by the nature around Wakasa Bay is created by applying multiple layers of colored lacquer and polishing.
